NELFUND: ABU Students Cry Out Over Delay In July, August Upkeep Allowance
The President of the Ahmadu Bello University Students’ Representative Council (ABUSRC), Comrade Nazeer Ibrahim Kallah, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria, particularly the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), to pay the outstanding upkeep for July and August to ABU students in order to avoid compromising the scheme.
President Kallah in a statement on Sunday expressed disappointment, stating that the last time ABU students received their upkeep was for June, leaving the months of July and August unpaid at the time of this announcement.
“We are now in September, and my fellow students at ABU have not yet received their upkeep for July and August. This delay has placed many students in a difficult situation, especially as exams approach. Many students are struggling to balance their academic responsibilities due to the frustration caused by the non-payment of these funds”, he said.
Kallah urged the government to either issue a communiqué to clarify the rumors surrounding the stoppage of payments, or to explain the reason for the delay.
“We are talking about education and students’ welfare. We need to strive for improvement rather than stagnation. I am confident that our politicians receive their salaries on time; why then should students be subjected to this delay? Are politicians more valuable than students? The government needs to clarify whether this scheme has been halted or not”
The ABU Students noted that the academic session is still ongoing and has not yet ended and called on the government to the needful and pay students for July and August immediately.
