ASUU Chairman UniAbuja Dr Ugoh gets Vote of No Confidence

Determined to check the inherent corrupt practices and growing list of offences committed by Dr Sylvanus Ugoh, Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja chapter, members of the Union have passed a vote of no confidence on him and other members of the executive.
In a document obtained by Business Africa Digest in Abuja over the weekend and signed by 82 members of the ASUU branch, the aggrieved academics said the vote of no confidence in the Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh led executive has become necessary in the interest of the Union.
Offences listed in the document include but not limited to misrepresentation of the Union at National Executive Council meeting of ASUU, manipulation of minutes at congress meetings, refusal to circulate minutes to members, gross violation of provisions of ASUU constitution, and insensitivity to the welfare of members.
The ASUU, University of Abuja branch describes Dr. Ugoh led executive as chasing rats while the house was on fire.
The Union members said while Dr. Ugoh urged other members not to submit publications for promotion using the 2021 guidelines, Dr. Ugoh went ahead to submit his publications for promotion thereby bringing other members to ridicule.
They vowed to take what they call “further other actions” in the interest of the Union, if the executive members fail to comply with the vote of no confidence.
The 82 members of ASUU who signed the vote of no confidence documents said for three congress meetings, the vote of no confidence had been moved, but that each time, it had been suppressed by the executive of the Union.
The vote of no confidence document was received yesterday by the Chairman, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh and the National President of ASUU.

Dear Sir,
A Vote of No Confidence in the Chairman, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh and Other Members of the Executive of ASUU- UNIABUJA for Abuse of Office, Corruption and Other Unethical Practices.
You would recall that at the Congress of ASUU, UNIABUJA held on 12th March 2025, your ability to lead the affairs of the branch was challenged and consequently, a motion passing a vote of no confidence in you and all the Executive members was moved.
You would also recall that, that was the third time such a motion had been moved at the Congress and each time, the vote of no confidence was suppressed by the powers that be. Furthermore, you would recall that on two occasions, you had convened Congress and members prevented you from presiding over the meetings due to their dissatisfactions with your leadership- corruption, abuse of office and other unethical practices.
As concerned members of the Union, we owe it a duty to uphold due process and traditions of the Union. Hence, we hereby submit unequivocally, requesting you the Chairman and other members of the Executive of ASUU, University of Abuja, to step aside with immediate effect on the receipt of this letter.
This petition is presented in the interest of justice, fairness and integrity of ASUU. Your actions and the actions of the other executive members ae not in line with the principles and rules of our Union. The grounds of the vote of no confidence are as follows:
1. Breach of Appendix I – Code of Practice of the Union’s Constitution, especially section 4(d) i – iii, by the Chairman and other members of the Executive of ASUU- UNIABUJA branch.
2. False declaration and practices by the Chairman and other members of the Executive of ASUU, UNIABUJA, that it is superior to and is empowered by the principles of ASUU, to issue directives to Congress and that Congress is a subject of the Chairman and other members of the Executive of ASUU, University of Abuja branch.
3. Refusal and failure by the Chairman and other members of the Executive of UNIABUJA, to produce and circulate to members, minutes of meetings, even when Congress demanded for them.
4. Alteration and circulation of doctored Resolutions of Congress by the Chairperson and other members of the Executive of ASUU, UNIABUJA.
5. Refusal and failure by the Chairperson and other members of the Executive of ASUU, UNIABUJA, to circulate, and or deliver to the appropriate quarters, Congress’ Resolutions.
6.Lack of interest in the welfare of members by the Chairperson and other members of the Executive of ASUU, UNIABUJA.
7. Dissatisfaction of members towards you and other members of the Executive. This finds expression in the average number of 35 members in attendance each time the congress is called. This falls short of the required 60 in attendance to form a quorum at a congress meeting of ASUU, University of Abuja.
8. Deception and manipulation of the Congress, especially by encouraging members to disregard new promotion guidelines, while, the Chairperson submitted himself for promotion, using the very guidelines, and telling other members to disregard the guidelines.
9. Misrepresentation of members of ASUU, University of Abuja branch by the Chairman and other Members of the Executive of the branch, at National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU held at Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMinna) on Saturday 8th – Sunday 9th February, 2025. .
Based on the foregoing, we the undersigned, request that you, Dr Sylvanus Ugoh and the entire Members of the Executive of the ASUU, UNIABUJA branch step down with immediate effect. We are determined to uphold the truth and integrity of our Union.
We reserve the rights to present further facts and particulars in support of this petition, as well as lead both oral and documentary evidence.
We trust that you will act swiftly and decisively. Failure to do so, we have no other option, but to take further other actions necessary under the law for the interest of ASUU, University of Abuja branch.

This vote of no confidence is in the interest of justice, fairness and integrity of ASUU as an Institution on one hand and on the other, to address the matters that have transpired under the office of Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh and other members of the Executive of ASUU, University of Abuja Branch. We strongly believe this aligns with the principles and rules of our Union.
As members of the Union, we have the responsibility to uphold the rule of law of our Union. Hence, this vote of no confidence on the Chairman and other members of the executive of the branch.
