DataPro Limited’s West Africa sub-regional operations went a notch higher following regulatory approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of The Gambia to provide credit rating services in the country.

With the approval, DataPro will introduce its credit assessment expertise into The Gambia’s financial market, where growing financing needs and efforts to strengthen financial infrastructure have increased the importance of reliable credit information.

According to its latest newsletter, DataPro said its independent credit rating services could help strengthen the information available to lenders and investors, providing a structured basis for evaluating the creditworthiness of businesses and financial institutions.

The company further said that access to finance depended not only on the availability of funds but also on the ability of lenders and investors to assess the risks associated with extending credit or committing capital.

According to the company, independent credit ratings provide an objective assessment of an entity’s capacity to meet its financial obligations, enabling market participants to make better-informed financing and investment decisions.

DataPro said such services could be particularly relevant to licensed commercial banks in The Gambia seeking to assess credit exposures, as well as businesses, including Gambian-owned telecommunications companies, looking to communicate their financial standing and credit profiles to prospective lenders and investors.

The company also posited that credit ratings complement existing financial information and internal risk assessments but do not guarantee access to funding or eliminate credit risks.

It noted that the adoption and practical relevance of credit ratings in The Gambia would depend largely on the evolving needs of issuers, investor expectations and the extent to which financial institutions integrate independent credit assessments into their lending and investment decisions.

Beyond this development, DataPro said it was also preparing to deepen understanding of the risks and opportunities within The Gambia’s financial system, particularly the banking sector.

It identified asset quality, capital adequacy, liquidity and profitability as critical indicators for assessing the resilience of financial institutions, noting that prevailing macroeconomic conditions could significantly influence borrowers’ repayment capacity and the overall quality of banks’ assets.

To provide further insight into these developments, the company disclosed plans to publish its Gambia Banking Risk Outlook 2027 in the first quarter of next year.

The proposed report will examine major risks, emerging developments and other factors shaping the financial position of banks and the broader operating environment in The Gambia.

DataPro said the initiative would provide market participants with additional insight into the banking sector’s risk profile and the factors influencing financial stability.

The company’s entry into The Gambia comes amid growing recognition of the importance of credible financial information in developing capital markets and expanding access to sustainable financing.

As businesses and financial institutions seek new sources of capital, independent credit assessments can help bridge information gaps between borrowers and prospective lenders by providing a consistent framework for evaluating financial risks.

For The Gambia, the introduction of DataPro’s services could therefore support efforts to strengthen credit risk assessment, improve market transparency and enhance the information available to participants in the country’s developing financial market.

DataPro believes that the long-term impact of the initiative will depend on the extent to which businesses, banks, investors and other market participants embrace credit ratings as an integral part of their business decisions.
