Gas leak detection technology will advance energy transition – Lokpobiri
(Business Africa Digest)-The Federal government has said the deployment of Amal gas leak detection technology will advance the country’s adoption of compressed natural gas(CNG) and also promote the country’s energy transition programme.
The Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, stated this Thursday at the Commissioning of Amal Technologies Gas Leak Detection Manufacturing Facility at Idu Industrial Park, Abuja.
Senator Lokpobiri said it was not a mistake that Nigeria chose natural gas as its transition fuel, adding that
the commissioning of the gas leak detection facility was a major plus for the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu in deepening gas penetration and industrialization.
The Minister said several projects are underway to establish fuel-to-gas conversion centres and CNG refuel stations nationwide to achieve net zero.
“A major plank under the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President is the commitment to deepen gas penetration and gas-based industrialization anchored on the penetration of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles, and gas conversion for power generation and fertiliser production, among so many other uses of gas. The deployment of the flagship Amal Technology gas leak detection device provides a significant safety tool that will accelerate the adoption of gas as a preferred energy source for homes, transportation, and industry.
“The Federal Government at COP26 in August 2022 committed to a net-zero target by 2060, and Nigeria has chosen natural gas as its transition fuel. To support this initiative, projects are underway to establish fuel-to-gas conversion centres and CNG refuel stations nationally. The Federal Government expects that deploying the Amal technology safety device will also complement our efforts to accelerate the net-zero pathway,” he said.
Speaking at the occasion , the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, Felix Ogbe, said the technology will end the ugly trend of gas explosions across the country, apart from massive job creation in the sector.
“The recurring menace of gas leaks and explosions leading to heavy losses in human lives, property damage, and pollution of the environment is the problem statement that the device seeks to address,” he stated.
Earlier in his welcome address the Chief Executive officer and founder of Amal Tech Limited Mr Shehu Abdulahi said the smart gas leak and smoke detection alarm gives early signal of gas leak or smoke.
He noted that the life- saving device helps to identify the source of the leak, to hereby giving people the opportunity to address it and protect one’s family and property.
On the effectiveness of the device Mr Abdulahi said”Amal Tech developed this innovation that is inexpensive and Internet of Things(IoT) for sending alert via app and calling user’s Mobile phone. In homes where there is no WI-FI, the smart gas leak/smoke detection alarm will send a text to the registered number.
According to him, the device will call if the intensity of the leakage is getting high, as it uses an algorithm that can estimate if fire outbreak can occur as a result of gas leaks or smoke.
He said the availability of the device in homes and offices as well as factories will no doubt protect people and their property from potential fire outbreaks.
