The six month shutdown of the power plant was sequel to system turbulence, grid collapses, and generator transformer bushing failures, which occurred on about 29th of December 2025 for GT13.

Confirming the return of the Power Plant to operation to Journalists at Ajaokuta, the Acting Managing Director of the Company, Engr. Muhammed Sani Jaoji said the reconnection to the Power Grid System was achieved by his Team of Engineers at about 08.48 am on Tuesday, 18th August 2026.

This effort marks the beginning of a robust recovery programme by the new owners, MA’AM Energy Limited, whose determination is to ensure that the Power Plant returns to its dominant market position of generating 10% of Nigeria’s total electricity consumption, the Acting Managing Director assured.

Speaking further on the rehabilitation programme, Engr. Muhammed Sani Jaoji disclosed that the second phase of the recovery programme is targeted at ensuring that the second thermal power Transformer unit, whose rehabilitation is nearing completion, would be synchronised to the National Grid in September 2026, while the third Unit would also follow in October 2026.

Our efforts to inject life into the Geregu Power Plc facilities are largely intended to return the Power Plant to full production and generation as well as to restore shareholders’ confidence and participate actively in the Energy Market of the Country; he said.

The Acting Managing Director commended the Chairman and Directors of the Board for their doggedness and determination in providing strong direction to Management and Staff of the Power Plant to achieve this milestone.

Speaking on their experience, Engr. Bernard Siaka, who is the Head of Maintenance of the Plant, disclosed that before the former owners divested their interest to the new Owners, the Plant’s GT11 Unit had been out of production since 27th May 2023, leaving GT12 and GT13 in operation

The Head of Maintenance further disclosed that on 29th December 2025, when the Power Plant was taken over by the new owner, the remaining GT12 and GT13 encountered system turbulence and grid collapse at about 14.02 hours. This incident led to Transformer failure.

According to him, this challenge arose from the poor handling of the major system overhaul carried out by the previous owners, who opted to use another Company for the overhaul rather than Siemens, the original Builders of the Power Plant who are the patent holders of the Original Equipment (OEM).

We have found our rhythm and confidence with the new Acting Managing Director, who before now was a foundation Engineer of the Plant, and this new confidence and enthusiasm of the Workers will guide us in our quest to take back the Geregu Power Plc to its leading position in the Energy industry, Engr. Bernard Siaka affirmed.

Also speaking at the reconnection ceremony, the new acting Chief Technical Officer of the Plant, Engr, Ali Muhammed Mambo, said, when we learnt of the appointment of the new Acting Managing Director, the entire workforce expressed their excitement at the news. “To us, the season of anomy is over, and with the high team spirit enveloping the workers, Geregu Power Plc’s stability is assured.’’

Thanking the Engineering Team of the Company for their commitment and for a job well done, the new Acting Managing Director, Engr. Muhammed Sani Jaoji told the Workers that their feat shows competence and confidence in the capacity of the Nigerian Engineers in surmounting industry challenges. He conveyed the good wishes of the Chairman and Directors of the Board, assuring them of their commitment towards making Geregu Power Plc conducive for professional practice.

On the commitment of the Company to Shareholders, the Acting Managing Director said; ‘’ We are not unmindful of our responsibilities to our Shareholders, and our efforts thus far are to create a sound and efficient production regime that would engender favourable reliability of the Plant facilities with low and minimum production challenges; Engr. Jaoji assured..

It would be recalled that in October 2022, Geregu Power Plc was listed as a Public Company with a financial stock base of 250 billion Naira, with about 95.5% stake, but the stake went down to 76.4 % by September 2025 before it was sold to MA’AM Energy Limited; but because of a decline in the Stock Values of the Shares in recent times, following Post take-over challenges, Investors raised concerns on the performance of the Share Values of the Stocks and defaults on Bond payments.
